New Solution Contributes to Reliable Solar Power Supply

Oct 16, 2020

Recently, a method using methylammonium thiocyanate (MASCN) vapor treatment to convert δ-FAPbI3 to the desired pure α-phase below the thermodynamic phase-transition temperature has been raised by an international research team, led by Fudan scientists Zhan Yiqiang and Zheng Lirong and EPFL scientists Anders Hagfeldt and Michael Grätzel, in the paper titled “Vapor-assisted deposition of highly efficient, stable black-phase FAPbI3 perovskite solar cells” published in Science on October 2.

According to previous research, metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) can reach a high power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.5%, far exceeding other thin-film solar cells. Among all the metal-halide perovskites, FAPbI3 (where FA is formamidinium) has been shown to be an ideal candidate for efficient, stable PSCs. Obtaining highly crystalline, stable, and pure α-phase FAPbI3 films, which is photoactive, has been of vital importance. However, FAPbI3 undergoes a phase transition to the photoinactive δ-phase below 150°C.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations show that the SCN– anions promote the formation and stabilization of α-FAPbI3. These vapor-treated FAPbI3 PSCs exhibit outstanding photovoltaic and electroluminescent performance.

The researchers realize a complete conversion from δ- to α-FAPbI3 at 100°C using the MASCN vapor treatment method. This phase transition can also be achieved using FASCN vapor. The vapor-treated FAPbI3 film remained in its pure black phase even after 500 hours of annealing at 85°C, whereas the reference FAPbI3 film decomposed to PbI2 during the heat exposure.

Stable and phase pure MASCN vapor-treated FAPbI3 films.
Vapor-treated FAPbI3 films were annealed at 85°C for 500 hours in an N2 environment.

They also performed long-term operational stability tests for 500 hours with the maximum power point (MPP) tracking under continuous 1 sun illumination for our FAPbI3 PSCs.

Operational stability test of the vapor-treated FAPbI3-based PSCs.

Tests were performed under 500 hours of MPP-tracking conditions for (A) PCE, (B) Jsc, (C) Voc, (D) FF, and (E) hysteresis factor (Prev/Pfor).

These findings are important for developing stable and pure black-phase FAPbI3-based PSCs. The vapor-treated FAPbI3 PSCs showed high efficiency and good long-term stability under MPP tracking conditions, promoting the extensive use of solar energy in all aspects of our lives. They can be used to develop efficient large-area and flexible photoelectronic devices, and provide sustainable, autonomous power supply for robots for example. Also, because of its high open-circuit voltage and high external quantum efficiency electroluminescence yield, pure α-FAPbI3 will be useful for other applications such as light-emitting diodes and photodetectors.

Recent Advances on New group V graphyne

Mar 22, 2020

Recently, Prof. Hao Zhang and Prof. Rongjun Zhang from the Department of Optical Science and Engineering of the School of Information Science and Technology, in collaboration with Prof. Wenjun Liu from the School of Microelectronics, designed new group-V graphyne and investigated their properties and thermoelectric properties. On March 20, this work was published on Materials Today Physics entitled New group V graphyne: two-dimensional direct semiconductors with remarkable carrier mobilities, thermoelectric performance, and thermal stability.

Carbon is an active element with rich valence states, and the inventions of its allotropes, e.g. fullerene, carbon nanotubes, carbon fiber and graphene, have triggered significant impacts on industries and scientific researches for decades. Graphyne is a new allotrope of carbon, which was originally predicted by R. H. Baughman in 1987. Graphyne consists of sp and sp2 hybrid-bonding carbon atoms, and it is the most stable among the artificially designed carbon allotropes currently. It has been reported that, graphyne possesses high carrier mobility and low lattice thermal conductivity, which may lead to wide applications in the fields of energy storage and transformation, biomedicine, and seawater desalination. In 2010, graphyne was successfully fabricated, the research is speeding up in recent years.

However, similar to graphene, graphyne possesses a Dirac cone-shaped electronic structure, and thus the on-off ratio of graphyne-based FET device is low, which limits its application in the field of nanoelectronics. To deal with the gapless bandstructure of graphyne, in this work, we replaced the four carbon atoms in the graphene with five group elements of N, P, As, and in this way, we successfully designed three new kinds of graphyne derivatives, i.e. C16N4, C16P4, C16As4. We investigated the thermo-dynamical stabilities of these new materials, and found that they maintain stable up to high temperature of 1500 K, which means they are believed to be easily fabricated.

By calculations, we show that they are direct-band-gap semiconductors, and amazingly, we found that, their electron mobilities reach the order of 105cm2V-1s-1, which is comparable to graphene, revealing their wonderful potential in the microelectronic devices.

Figure 1 Crystal structure of group V graphyne

The complex crystal structure and the introduction of Group V elements further reduce the lattice thermal conductivity of the material, which is three orders of magnitude smaller than graphene at room temperature. This means that these materials are expected to convert more thermal energy into electrical energy with high efficiencies. We calculated the room temperature thermoelectric figure of merit (zT value), which is generally used to determine the energy-conversion efficiency of thermoelectric materials, and we found the zT values of the new graphyne derivative are in the range of 0.62-0.69, which is comparable to traditional thermoelectric materials.

The achievements we obtained in this work will lay the foundation for the futural application of graphyne-derivative materials in nanoelectronic devices, micro-nano energy devices, etc. This work is the result of cooperative researches of multiple departments and multiple research groups of Fudan University. Wu Yu, a PhD student in the Department of Optical Science and Engineering, Ma Congcong, a 2018 PhD student in the Department of Electric Light Sources, and Chen Ying, a 2018 graduate student of the Institute of Engineering and Applied Technology, are the co-first authors. This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (No: 11374063, 11674062, 11544008), Shanghai Natural Science Foundation (19ZR1402900, 18ZR1402500), etc.

Figure 2 a) Band structure of C16N4 b) crystal structure of C16N4 at 1500 K under AMID c) comparison of electron mobilities of the three predicted materials with carbon-based materials with high mobility d) room temperature zT value of C16N4

Dr. Fei Yiyan and her research partners jointly publish on Nature an innovative ...

Nov 02, 2019

On October 31, researchers at Fudan University, including Profs. Boxun Lu (School of Life Sciences), Yiyan Fei (School of Informatics Science and Engineering), and Yu Ding (School of Life Sciences) published online under the title “Allele-selective Lowering of Mutant HTT Protein by HTT-LC3 Linker Compounds” in Nature and showed their study about an innovative method of drug discovery: using the autophagosome-tethering compounds (ATTEC) to degrade pathogenic proteins and treat the disease. The team carried out a smartly-designed screening featuring small-molecule microarray and front-edge optical technologies, and managed to identify four small molecule compounds that specifically reduced the protein that caused Huntington's disease, bringing hope to the disease-progression-modifying treatment of this disease and similar diseases. Lu Boxun, Fei Yiyan and Ding Yu are the corresponding authors of the paper. Li Zhaoyang, Wang Cen, Wang Ziying and Zhu Chenggang, PhD. students at Fudan University, are the first authors. The research was jointly funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China.

Dr. Fei’s group has developed a label-free high-throughput optical platform for biomolecular interactions which has been applied in various systems including proteins, small molecules, viruses and bacteria. The optical platform consists of biochip and oblique-incidence reflectivity difference (OI-RD) technique. Based on detection of changes on thickness or refractive index, OI-RD is able to measure biomolecular interactions without labels. With 2D scanning, OI-RD is able to image biochip with area about 8~10 cm2 so that it can measure up to 10,000 biomolecular interactions at the same time. The optical platform provides an efficient method to probe biomolecular interactions in label-free and high throughput mode.

With joint efforts, the team found four small molecules that can specifically reduce the protein that caused Huntington’s disease. Huntington's disease (HD) is one of the four major neurodegenerative diseases that have been most extensively studied. Since the biochemical activity of the mutant huntingtin protein (mHTT) that causes the disease is uncharacterized, the conventional drug discovery approach relied on inhibitors that block the bioactivity of the pathogenic proteins is not applicable. Protein degradation is a promising way for HD. Autophagy is an intracellular protein degradation machinery and will degrade all proteins engulfed into autophagosomes, including the normal wild-type huntingtin protein that plays a role in neuroprotection and other important proteins, if enhanced non-specifically. This would be possibly self-defeating. How can we identify compounds that only degrades mHTT but not wild-type HTT? The team envisioned a “small molecule glue” functioning as Autophagosome Tethering Compound (ATTEC), which could tether LC3 and mHTT together so that mHTT is engulfed into autophagosomes for degradation. Meanwhile, the ATTEC does not interact with the wild-type HTT protein, leaving it unaffected.

In fact, such ATTECs were highly challenging to identify. Only one out of about two thousand compounds has the desired properties. It is like a needle in a haystack. Thus finding it had been a major obstacle of this project for a long time. The platform of Dr. Fei’s group provided an efficient and economic tool to look for ATTECs. The research team stamped nearly four thousand small-molecule compounds onto a chip and had the target protein flow through the chip. If it binds to a specific compound immobilized onto the chip, the molecular layer at the position will thicken, generating a tiny change that can be detected by OI-RD. Using this cutting-edge screening approach, the team found two small molecules that could bind to both LC3 and mHTT proteins, but not to wild-type HTT. After studying a panel of small molecule compounds with similar structures, a total of four ATTECs that bind LC3 and mutant HTT were identified and validated.

(a)OI-RD image of small molecule microarray; (b) Two small molecules that can bind to LC3 and mHTT but not to HTT.

The team found that these four compounds significantly reduced mHTT levels in HD mouse neurons, HD patient cells, and HD Drosophila models at ~10 to 100 nanomolar concentrations, with little effect on wild-type HTT levels. Excitingly, at least two out of these four compounds are able to cross the blood-brain barrier, and a small dose of intraperitoneal injection would significantly reduce mHTT levels in the cortex and striatum of HD mice, without affecting wild-type HTT levels. They also significantly improved disease-related phenotypes, providing an entry point for the development of oral or injectable drugs for HD. The team further explored the intrinsic mechanisms by which these small molecule compounds could distinguish between mutant and wild-type HTT proteins, which were almost identical except in the glutamine repeat (polyQ) length. It turned out that these compounds were bound to excessively long polyQ stretches that only appeared in mHTT. Based on this, the team realized that the application of these small molecule compounds may reach far beyond the potential treatment of Huntington's disease. Nine human diseases are so called polyQ diseases, because they are caused by specific mutant proteins containing excessively long polyQ. Among them, spinocerebellar ataxia type III (SCA3) is the most common polyQ diseases in the Chinese population. A world class expert in the neurodegenerative disease field and a member of National Academy of Sciences and winner of Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, Huda Zoghbi, wrote a commentary article in Nature for this research: “exciting discovery”, “this therapeutic strategy might be useful not only for Huntington’s disease, but also for other diseases involving expanded polyglutamine tracts”.

Based on the high throughput optical platform, Dr. Haipeng Liu of Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital and Dr. Fei collaborated also published their important collaboration work in Nature (Nuclear cGAS suppresses DNA repair and promotes tumorigenesis). The application of this optical platform in the fields of biomedicine and other fields will be greatly enhanced.

Oct 28, 2019

Recently, Prof. Shulin Sun (School of Information Science and Technology at Fudan University) and the co-authors have published an invited review paper with the title of “Electromagnetic meta-surfaces: physics and applications” in Advances in Optics and Photonics (Ref: Adv. Opt. Photon. 11 (2), 380-479 (2019), DOI: 10. 1364 / AOP. 11. 000380) in collaboration with Prof. Lei Zhou (Physics Department at Fudan University). This journal is one top review journal in the field of optics with an impact factor of 21.3 in 2017 and only more than 10 papers per year.

The reviewer highly appreciated our work with the following comment: “I would like to personally thank the authors for putting together this excellent review paper”. In this review paper of 100 pages, Prof. Sun et al not only reviewed the development of the meta-surfaces in past more than 10 years, but also introduced important achievements of many excellent research groups in the world-wide. The authors have also pointed out several possible important developing directions of this field in the future.

After reviewing the history of optics, we find that the conventional methods to control lights are still quite limited even if we have known and investigated lights for thousands of years. For example, we always utilize a bulky optical lens with carefully fabricated curved surface to focus the lights for a long time. However, these devices suffer from some limitations, e.g., huge size, heavy weight and limited functionalities, being un-favored for optical applications in the future. To overcome these challenges, meta-surfaces are proposed recently in order to realize our dream of manipulating lights freely, which can be widely applied in a broad fields of energy, information, and national defense, etc. Compared to conventional optical elements, meta-surfaces exhibit several advantages, including mini-size, light weight and easy fabrication and integration. These characteristics are highly desired in many applications. Now, meta-surfaces has become one important and hot field of modern optics and photonics.

In 2011 and 2012, the groups from Harvard University, Purdue University and Fudan University have proposed the new concept of meta-surfaces, i.e., a kind of two-dimensional metamaterials composed by artificial subwavelength microstructures arranged in specific order. In previous studies, people have proposed homogenous meta-surfaces for manipulating the amplitude, phase and polarization of the light. For instance, we can fabricate the carefully designed meta-surfaces to make an opaque object (e.g., a metal film) being transparent. People have also designed another class of meta-surfaces as perfect light absorbers, behaving like “an optical black hole”. Recently, it is found the microstructures’ arrangement order of meta-surfaces can play an important role in light manipulations. By carefully designing local optical responses of microstructures at different positions, we can achieve numerous novel optical phenomena. The group from Harvard University proposed to utilize the gradient meta-surfaces to manipulate the directions of refraction and reflection beams. And our group has proposed the gradient meta-surface as a bridge linking the propagating waves and surface waves. All these phenomena go beyond the classic Snell’s law, and can be described by the new generalized Snell's law.

Prof. Sun et al have contributed a series of outstanding works in the field of meta-surfaces, including high-efficiency conversion from PWs to SWs, spin-polarized light manipulations, etc. They have the following awards in recent years, including “Important achievements of optics in China (2012)”; “First prize of Shanghai Natural Science (2016)”, “Outstanding Paper in LSA (2018)”, etc.

In this important review paper, Prof. Shulin Sun (School of Information Science and Technology at Fudan University) is the first author. And Prof. Qiong He (Physics Department at Fudan University), Prof. Jiaming Hao (Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics, CAS) and Prof. Shiyi Xiao are the co-authors. Breakthroughs in novel semiconductor photodetector and image sensor by Prof. Wan...

Oct 08, 2019

Recently, Prof. Wan Jing’s group from the School of Information Science and Technology at Fudan University has made several breakthroughs in the research of novel semiconductor photodetector and image sensor. These breakthroughs have been published in Advanced Functional Materials (IF: 15.6; 10.1002/adfm.201906242), and IEEE Electron Device Letters (10.1109/LED.2019.2892782 and 10.1109/LED.2019.2908632).

Wavelength Photodetector:

Prof. Wan Jing and Prof. Bao Wenzhong from the School of Microelectronic Engineering (MEE) have cooperated to combine novel device physics and 2D materials, and invented several novel photodetectors.

Conventional photodetector is sensitive to the light intensity, where its output current or voltage is modulated by the light intensity. Jing proposed a photodetector controlled by multiple photogates. By combining the multiple photogates and novel 2D materials, a novel photodetector which is only sensitive to the wavelength has been demonstrated experimentally, see Fig. 1(a) and (b).

The result has been published in Advanced Functional Materials. Thanks to its unique property, the device can find applications in light spectrum scope, calibration of laser wavelength, detection of fluorescence and fire temperature meter.

Besides, Prof. Wan has invented interface coupled photodetector (ICPD), which, for the first time, utilizes the interface coupling effect in the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate to augment the photodetection responsivity. This effect is further demonstrated with SOI/MoS2 heterojunction devices which shows tunable response spectrum, see Fig. 1(c) and (d). This result has been published in IEEE Electron Device Letters and can be potentially applied in multi-spectral image sensing.

Fig. 1 (a) Novel wavelength photodetector and (b) its response to light with various wavelength and intensity;(c) interface coupled photodetector and its (d) response spectrum

Photoelectron in-situ sensing device (PISD) as a one-transistor active pixel sensor:

The core of the conventional CMOS image sensor is the CMOS active pixel sensor (APS). In order to achieve the functionalities, such as photosensing, charge integration, signal amplification and random access, the conventional CMOS APS needs to combine at least three transistors and one photodiode in a pixel cell.

This largely complicates its structural design and reduces the quantum efficiency. Jing discovered a unique deep depletion effect in the SOI substrate and utilized it for photosensing, which leads to the invention of photoelectron in-situ sensing device (PISD).

Jing’s cooperation with Prof. Jiang Yulong from the School of MEE has further improved this device with advanced CMOS technology, as shown in Fig. 2(a) and (b). Selected as the cover page of IEEE Electron Device Letters, see Fig. 2(c), the research is commented as “revolutionary” by its reviewer.

PISD, as a one-transistor APS (1T-APS), successfully combines all functionalities in one transistor. This can largely simplify the pixel design and improve its efficiency. Considering the huge market of image sensor, the development of PISD is very helpful for China to break the monopoly in the global market.

Fig. 2 (a)photoelectron insitu sensing device and (b)its response to various light pulses;(c) Cover page of IEEE Electron Device Letters with PISD

Prof. Zhan Yiqiang group from School of Information Science and Engineering in Fudan University has developed the humidity sensor with superfast recovery speed based on the lead-free Cs2BiAgBr6 double perovskite. On April 15, the research results were published in Advanced Functional Materials (IF:15.6, 10.1002/adfm.201902234) under the title of “Lead Free Cs2BiAgBr6 Double Perovskite Based Humidity Sensor with Superfast Recovery Time”. In the research of humidity response of perovskite, the group has innovatively revealed a kind of humidity sensitive mechanism which is totally different from the interaction between traditional perovskite materials and water molecules - reversible physical adsorption and desorption. This research result will bring a very broad application prospect for lead-free double perovskite materials in the field of humidity response.

Figure 1 Response curve and mechanism of humidity response

Cs2BiAgBr6 is a kind of newly developed lead-free perovskite with good photoelectric property and high stability. By analyzing the humidity response of the material at different temperatures, the group found that the adsorption effect of water molecules on the surface of perovskite is the main humidity-sensitive mechanism. The humidity sensor based on lead-free double perovskite show a high performance, whose response and recovery speed can reach 1.78s and 0.45s, which is faster than the response speed of traditional ceramic oxide humidity sensor (~ 10s). Sep 29, 2018

Fudan students with their international peers tackled complex global challenges in African context using UN 2030 sustainability goals as their context.

The students from the Project Management and Product Development -course at a double master's degree ICT programme between Fudan University and University of Turku gave their final presentations Saturday 29th September. Their task was to go through a cycle of "From an Idea to a Product" in a project setting. The course sets main focus on combining inductive and human-centred design thinking methods, processes and activities with natural sciences based and deductive engineering know-how. "The fundamental idea being that in the complex world of high technology an engineer needs to first thoroughly understand the needs of different stakeholders such as customer and user and only after that design a holistic engineering solution that serves that need", said Mr. Ville Taajamaa, the course mentor.

Final products from the course were embedded smart system that answered a tangible real-life need in Africa and were based on one or several of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The project outcomes and products were assessed in terms of their 1) feasibility i.e. is it possible to actually produce such a product and service, 2) desirability i.e. is there a user group that wants to use the product and 3) viability i.e. is the customer ready to pay for the product and is it able to make profit.

During the course, a long-lasting industrial partner, a Finnish based company KONE and the Head of Design for Asia, Mr. Jussi Hiltunen provided his valuable insight and a practical workshop to the students at KONE Kunshan production and research & development site. Students were able to visit the actual manufacturing location of KONE products and in the afternoon go through a needfinding and design – development cycle led by Mr. J. Hiltunen. The goal was to understand the importance of finding the real need of the customer and user. The workshop was of high quality and proved to be very valuable to students learning while serving the overall goals of the course.

Sep 05, 2018

Recently, TIAN Pengfei, associate professor of the Department of Light Sources and Illuminating Engineering, and his team developed a laser-based white-light source for high-efficiency underwater solid-state lighting and high-speed underwater wireless optical communication. PhD candidate LIU Xiaoyan is the first author of the published paper on <ins>Optics Express</ins> on 16 July, 2018. The results were further reported as <ins>the newsbreaks in Laser Focus World</ins>.

The senior editor of Laser Focus World, Gail Overton, said that the researchers demonstrated red/green/blue (RGB) laser-diode systems with aggregate data transmission rate of 9.7 Gbit/s for RGB laser-diode-based wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). Furthermore, the multiplexed configuration also offers an RGB white-light underwater illumination capability that is not possible with single-laser-diode systems. Both underwater communications and underwater solid-state lighting are possible to cover a range of underwater ocean source exploration and underwater human activities.

Visit by Professor Min-Feng Yu from Georgia Institute of Technology

Jun 18, 2012

Invited by the Department of Optical Science and Engineering, Professor Min-Feng Yu in the School of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology is paying a visit to the School of Information Science and Technology, Fudan University from June 13 to July 5, and provided a lecture titled “Direct Writing of Wire Bonds with Sub-Micron Dimensions” on June 15.

The increasing device density in IC has led to exponential growth in the density of interconnects and the complexity of their design. With the introduction of three-dimensional (3D) chip architecture, interchip vias constitute one method to integrate devices in 3D stacks, but alternative interconnect technologies that can provide flexible means to electrically wire microscale device components in three dimensions are still required. In this talk, we introduce a “direct-write” method for metal wires to demonstrate an automated wire-bonding process that enabled Cu and Pt wire diameters of less than 1 micrometer and bond sizes of less than 3 micrometers, with a breakdown current density of more than 1011 amperes per square meter for the wire bonds. This new technology thus provides a brand new route to downscale interconnects to very fine pitches on the order of a few micrometers. In addition, the technology makes possible many new strategies for fabricating ultra-high-density and high-quality 3D microscale and nanoscale structures with designed structural and device functionalities, Professor Yu introduced in his lecture.

2011 New Year’s Speech

Dec 31, 2010

As time goes by, 2011 is coming soon. At this beautiful moment of bidding farewell to the old and ushering in the new, on behalf of the School of Information Science and Technology (SIST), we are delighted to extend New Year wishes to all teachers, students, overseas schoolfellows and friends all over the world!

SIST has been 10 years old until 2010. In October, we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of SIST by organizing a series of activities and events which include the 10th Anniversary Ceremony, Doctor Academic Forum, the Forum on Future Information Science, Technology and Education, and a Music and Dance Show. Alumni from all over the world gathered together to witness the glory years of SIST.

Looking back to 2010, we together with friends overseas overviewed the 10-year-history of SIST regarding the research and achievements and looked forward to the future development. “Reform” and “Development” are the key words for 2010. In this year, we issued the “SIST Discipline Development Plan for the Twelfth Five-Year Period”, and established the Platform for Technology Innovation. We laid emphasis on international perspective, and greatly optimized the structure of teaching staff by recruiting talents from the National 1000-Top Talents Scheme. The younger generation of academic leaders was emerging. At the same time, we aimed at frontier technologies of the world and the nation’s major needs in the development of science and technology. We kept on seeking new opportunities, exploring new directions, and always being ready for new challenges.

2010 is a memorable year for Shanghai. In this year, 275 students from SIST served at Shanghai Expo as volunteers. Their performance showed the philosophies of Shanghai Expo which are “understanding, communication, togetherness and cooperation”, and demonstrated the spirit of Fudan University students. Also in this year, taking the occasion of the 10-year Anniversary of SIST, we set up a special award for Alumni who once studied or worked at Fudan to appreciate their kind care and great support for the school.

Looking back to the past, we were diligent and we gained; looking to the future, we are confident and ready to go. We will keep on doing our best for the goal of establishing a well-known Information School both domestically and internationally, and look forward to writing a new chapter to make a more outstanding achievement.

With the coming of the first ray of sunshine in the dawn of 2011, we would like to wish you all a happy and peaceful New Year!

Dean: Li-Rong Zheng
Party Secretary: Jianyi Zhu
SIST, Fudan University
2010-12-31

Wu Yumao's Team from College of Future Information Technology Wins "Young Scientist Award" at CNSRP 2025

Doctoral student Lu Yanan wins Young Scientist Award at the 19th CNSRP

Oct 01, 2025

Award Announcement

The 19th China National Symposium on Radio Propagation (CNSRP) was recently held in Xi'an. During the conference, the 2025 Young Scientist Award ceremony took place. A paper co-authored by Lu Yanan, a doctoral student at Fudan University's College of Future Information Technology, won the Young Scientist Award with the highest score in its group. The paper is titled Parametric Modeling of Scattering Centers for Multi-Layer Coated Targets. The supervising instructor is Professor Wu Yumao.

Paper Summary

The attribute scattering center model can concisely and accurately describe the electromagnetic characteristics of radar targets, playing an important role in model-based automatic target recognition. In electromagnetic stealth technology for complex targets, coated dielectric materials are often used to reduce electromagnetic wave scattering. However, existing research has mostly focused on perfectly conducting targets, making it difficult to capture the true physical characteristics of coated targets using traditional models.

To address the challenge of fast and accurate parameter extraction of scattering centers for electrically large multi-layer coated targets, this paper derives the scattering mechanisms of typical primitives on multi-layer coated targets based on multi-layer equivalent reflection coefficients. The proposed scattering center model for multi-layer coated targets provides reliable theoretical and methodological support for target recognition and characteristic analysis in complex electromagnetic environments.

About CNSRP

The China National Symposium on Radio Propagation (CNSRP) is a premier academic conference in the field of radio propagation. This year's event was organised by the Radio Propagation Society of the China Institute of Electronics and Xidian University, under the theme "AI Empowers Radio Propagation, Radio Propagation Connects Us All." The conference aimed to build a high-level, forward-looking academic exchange platform to discuss the opportunities, challenges, and future of radio propagation technologies in the context of artificial intelligence.

A total of 513 papers were submitted to the conference, and 10 papers were selected for the Young Scientist Award.

From "Chasing Light" to "Harnessing Light": Three Academicians Lead Fudan's Photon Plan Class into the World of Optics

The 2024 Photon Plan – Academician Class visits CIOMP and explores frontier optics

Nov 01, 2024

Academician Wang Jiaqi: Exploring the Nation's Strategic Optical Instruments

The 2024 cohort of the Photon Plan – Academician Class visited the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP), Chinese Academy of Sciences. Academician Wang Jiaqi delivered a special lecture. He began with an arm-wrestling interaction to set the stage, then traced the institute's development history to systematically explain the deep logic of scientific innovation and spiritual heritage.

He quoted the late Academician Wang Daheng's famous words – "Innovation is born out of necessity" – and used the breakthrough of the ZS-6 optical remote sensor overcoming technological封锁 as a case study. This vividly illustrated the practical wisdom of "getting things done" among the "Five Abilities" – requiring not only the mathematical modelling skills of "learning how to learn" but also the cross-team collaboration abilities of "learning how to organise."

Students then visited the key laboratories at Daheng Building, observing up close the precision assembly and calibration process of the ZS-6 optical remote sensor. This high-resolution optical remote sensing core equipment was the first to apply computer-aided optical assembly and calibration technology, achieving industry-leading optical image quality and providing solid technical support for China's aerospace imaging. Inside the simulated sky survey optical facility, students learned in detail about spacecraft camera structures and core detector materials, deeply appreciating the strategic importance of "autonomous and controllable core technologies."

CIOMP, known as the "Cradle of Chinese Optics," has broken through numerous technological blockades since its establishment in 1952, developing China's first ruby laser, large high-precision 150 cine theodolite, electron microscope, and other key instruments. These achievements gave students a direct sense of the immense power of national strategic scientific and technological forces.

Academician Li Ruxin: Frontiers and Challenges of Extreme Optics

Academician Li Ruxin delivered a special lecture titled "Extreme Optics: Frontiers and Challenges" in Room 537, Physics Building, Handan Campus. Using the metaphor of "a beam of light at the nanoscale as a fine probe into the micro-world," he revealed its application potential in data storage and microscopy. By introducing attosecond light pulse phenomena, he presented cutting-edge breakthroughs in ultrafast optics. He further demonstrated the core role of extreme optics in fundamental science with the analogy of "an ultra-precise optical clock as an accurate time referee for verifying physical laws."

He also discussed the urgent demand from high-end lithography machines for high-precision optical processing and inspection. Using domestic and international case studies, he explained that extreme optics is the precision foundation and key enabler for lithography machines – "using light as a knife." The lecture frankly addressed challenges in the field, identifying bottlenecks such as low laser generation efficiency. By comparing energy demand differences between magnetic confinement fusion and inertial confinement fusion, he demonstrated the breakthrough potential of extreme optics in the energy sector.

Academician Li Ruxin specialises in ultra-high peak power ultra-short pulse lasers and strong-field laser physics, with significant achievements in this field. This intellectually stimulating lecture deeply impressed upon students that frontier exploration requires both ambitious vision and脚踏实地 efforts to tackle technical challenges.

Academician Connie Chang-Hasnain: Superstructure VCSEL Empowering Sensing and Communications

Academician Connie Chang-Hasnain delivered a lecture titled "Superstructure VCSEL: Empowering Sensing and Communications," taking students on a journey through the past, present, and future of communications technology. She focused on the technological innovations of vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) chips compared to edge-emitting laser chips, introducing the application potential of high-contrast gratings and superstructures in optical interconnects and AI computing.

She pointed out that innovative grating design and superstructure regulation can突破 the limitations of traditional VCSELs in power density, beam quality, and integration density, providing key technical support for high-speed optical interconnects, 3D sensing, and other applications. Students engaged in in-depth discussions on topics including "optimising the mass production cost of superstructure VCSELs" and "the application potential of high-contrast gratings and superstructures in optical interconnects and AI computing."

Academician Connie Chang-Hasnain is a renowned expert in nano-optoelectronics, with significant achievements in the synthesis, properties, and devices of nanostructured materials, broadband optical communications, VCSELs, and optical micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). This lecture also gave students a profound appreciation for the power of scientific heritage – the journey from "chasing light" to "harnessing light" – technological innovation is always on the move.
